Soiree Pour La Vie raises funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity
The Lunch4life committee has organised a fantastic evening of dinner, dancing and a charity auction at the Wentworth club. The guests were greeted by a piper as they walked the red carpet to the club. During the three course meal everyone was entertained by some brilliant dancers. The auctioneer Nick Bonham started the proceedings by auctioning a Zimbabwean billion dollar note, that is worth nothing, for £500. The other prizes were much more valuable and included a flight in a Spitfire and an all expense paid holiday in Mango Bay, Barbados. After the auction the band and DJ got all the guests on the dance floor!

This is the first time that the committee has organised an evening dinner and it was a great success, they raised over £62,000 for their chosen charities.

Congratulations to The Liberties who won the 2010 Real Man Cup and to The London Rebels who won the 2010 Real Man Plate
Twenty seven teams took part in the 2010 Real Man Cup at Wembley Goals Soccer Centre and the level of football was really high this year. There were all the elements of a good day of football; controversial refereeing decisions, penalty shootouts and lots of competitiveness! Tottenham Hotspurs legend, Graham Roberts, brought the FA Cup with him and presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up.

Several people succeeded in the crossbar challenge and many more failed! There was also a raffle and auction on the day and so far we have raised over £8,400. Thank you to everyone that took part.
It was a closely fought battle but in the end The Liberties held onto their title for the second year running. They won 4-0 in the final against the BHF team. Both keepers made some excellent saves and there was some nice back heels from one of the Liberties’ players – one very nearly resulted in a goal. John Oli, from BHF, was all over the pitch and despite his team losing he was voted the Player of the Tournament.

Scout Troop Salutes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
A Harpenden Scout Troop have put in a badge-worthy effort in their fundraising activities for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Eleven-year-old, Sean Hynes and his friends Adam Roach and Alistair Rigby from the 10th Harpenden Scouts, Wessex Troop, got together this week to create an information stand for The Prostate Cancer Charity and sell it’s Blue Man pin badges and sweets to raise funds. They also distributed information about prostate cancer to passers by.
Sean said: “We all had a really fun night and we are very happy that we helped to raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity. I liked the blue badges and we sold about 30 of them. We really hope that we can help again next year and sell even more badges.”
Sean’s father, local Policeman, Steve Hynes and Cub Scout Leader, said, ” The Scouts completely arranged everything . They did a great job for a very worthwhile charity. It is particularly pertinent as my friend is currently ungergoing treatment for this condition. He obtained extra Blue Man Badges to sell on the night.
“Every year the 10th Harpenden Scout Group put in a great effort to support various charities and this year we decided to raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity, following a colleagues diagnosis with the disease. I think it is really important to involve the scouts in charity fundraising from a young age and teach them to think about their health. If there was a badge for enthusiasm then the boys would definitely be awarded one - they put in a great effort to raise funds for the Charity and get people in Harpenden talking about Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.”

Going blue for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
If you are taking a stroll around Surrey or Devon this March and spot a man with blue hair approaching – fear not! Martians have probably not invaded as it most likely to be 62- year-old Pelham Reilly, who is taking to the streets this awareness month to spread the message about prostate cancer.
Not content with turning his car into an ‘awareness vehicle’ and driving around the streets of Surrey and Devon, he has
gone over and beyond the call of duty and has dyed his hair blue for the entire Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer himself, Pelham has decided to take to the streets and put in an effort to spread the message about the disease. He has covered his car in posters and information materials and he will be driving around, beeping his horn to raise awareness of the disease, which kills one man every hour in the UK.
Pelham’s father died of prostate cancer several years ago and Pelham was diagnosed with the disease himself through a routine health check in 2008 and is currently being treated. Like many men, Pelham had no symptoms of prostate cancer and so for him, the disease truly was hidden for some time.

Mark Foster hits the airwaves for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
The lovely Mark Foster took to the airwaves this week to urge people across the country to bring prostate cancer out of the shadows for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Mark, who was selected to front an in-store campaign at M&S throughout the month as part of its partnership with the Charity, donned his headphones as he took part in a series of radio interviews for the Charity, alongside our very own Dr Sarah Cant.
Most interviewers were keen to speak to Mark about his photo-shoot for the campaign, for which he stripped down to his M&S pants. They also wanted to learn more about why men, and their partners, should be more aware of the ‘hidden cancer’.
It was a really fun day, and Mark did a fantastic job in generating a real buzz around the month and getting people talking all over the country.
Anyone wanting to get involved, like Mark, can visit their local M&S store. The retailer is donating 10 per cent of the sales of men’s Autograph underwear to the Chairy. Or, people can hold their own Do Blue Day or join the Charity’s Day of Action. Whatever your style, there is something that everyone can do to help this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. You could even join Mark and pose in your pants too….

Afghanistan squaddies unite against prostate cancer this March
A group of service men, based in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, are doing their bit for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, despite being thousands of miles away from home.
The squaddies are making sure that prostate cancer is brought out of the shadows and everyone in their base knows about the disease, which affects 35,000 men in the UK each year.Quantity surveyor, Dean Campbell, 28, and friends have been displaying posters and awareness raising materials around Camp Bastion, which has approximately 15,000 soldiers, personnel and staff from the UK, United States and beyond based working there.
Bristol boy, Dean, said: “All of the boys over here in Afghanistan are really keen to get everyone talking about prostate cancer. A lot of men don’t like to talk about these things but we all believe that it takes a real man to stand up and be heard. The theme in camp this month is ‘uniting against prostate cancer’ and my primary aim is to make sure that every man out here knows about the risks of the disease and where to get help if they need it. If we all stand together we can fight prostate cancer.”
The Camp Bastion squaddies are joining thousands of people across the UK who are displaying Prostate Cancer Awareness Month posters and awareness raising materials in every place imaginable. To order your materials visit http://www.hiddencancer.org.uk/register.php

Mission Un-Impossible
The Prostate Cancer Charity has set a mission this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - to leave the disease nowhere to hide. A mission which one man has chosen to accept.
Specialist Support and Information Nurse, Suresh Rambaran, will set off on a solo expedition across the UK with one goal in mind, to raise awareness of prostate cancer in African Caribbean communities.African Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men and in recognition of this, Suresh will be giving a series of talks in ethnic communities across the UK throughout March. He will be aiming to get people talking about the disease and help to address the taboos and myths about prostate cancer that are often held in the African Caribbean community. The talks will help the Charity’s goal of bringing the hidden cancer out of the shadows this Awareness Month.
Suresh Rambaran has been working in the field of cancer nursing for more that 30 years. He joined The Prostate Cancer Charity in 2004 as a Support and Specialist Information Nurse. He has also been actively involved in many community activities such as the Trinidad and Tobago Nurses Association and a number of Caribbean community groups as well as health care professional organisations.
He will be visiting Warwick Street in Wolverhampton on Thursday 18 March, Dudley’s The Claughton Centre on Wednesday 24 March and Erdington in Birmingham on 27 March. Further dates are due to be announced.
For further information on Suresh’s talks, please contact him at suresh.rambaran@prostate-cancer.org.uk

John Fraser
To Isle of Wight residents, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month means one thing – pants. After last years huge success, local man, John Fraser, is bringing back his infamous pants walk and is encouraging all islanders to don their underwear over their trousers and join him on a scenic route to raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity.Former male model, John, 69, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001 and is a firm supporter of the Charity, campaigning effortlessly to raise awareness of the disease – and his latest endeavour is certainly grabbing attention.
John said: “The Island Walk For Prostate Cancer is all about getting the community together for a nice, healthy outing to promote Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and to raise a bit of cash for The Prostate Cancer Charity at the same time. Anyone is welcome to come along and last years walk was a lot of fun with 66 people taking part. We managed to raise £3,000 for the Charity, which I was over the moon with. I’m hoping this year will be even bigger and better and so I’m asking everyone on the Island to put on their pants!
“This month is all about exposing prostate cancer as the hidden cancer. Sporting your pants over your trousers is one way of making a bold statement that people cannot ignore. 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK and I am backing The Prostate Cancer Charity’s efforts to cast light on the need for more investment in research, to improve men’s experience of the disease and to make support and information more available, all the way.”
John will lead his ramblers on Sunday 28 March at 11am through Fort Victoria County Park, Brambles, Colwell, to Totland Pier, Freshwater, and return to Yarmouth via the causeway. The walk will take between three and four hours, and those who are keen are asked to make a suggested £5 donation to take part.
To take part in the walk, phone or text John on 07767 204 001 or call 01983 755 909.
